    What excites and concerns you about teaching Digital Technologies?

    Why DT? Digital Technologies & Hangarau Matihiko (DT & HM) have recently been  included into the Technology learning area of the New Zealand Curriculum. DT & HM includes topics that have never been part of this learning area before, so chances are you may not have encountered this as part of your own education.

    Tell us how you’re feeling about the additions to the curriculum in the comments section below. You might find others with similar thoughts to your own.

    This is amazing and exciting for education but will need integrating with other curriculum, otherwise how do we fit it all in?

        What excites me: The opportunity to provide rich value to our students.

        What concerns me: Is the speed in which this feels to be put into place. There is quite a bit of foundation building to have established prior that takes time.

          What excites me - The more I read the more I can see how some staff, who are hesitant, can be reassured. The collaborative nature of many of the activities I have seen so far also excite me. I really want to develop the problem solving skills of my students and I can see how Digital Technologies can support that. 

          What concerns me - Convincing and supporting other staff members. Making sure that I am able to become a role model for others so that I can encourage their development.

              Sue Foster I totally agree about showing some manaakitanga (support) and mohiotanga (sharing) now's our time to shine!

              If we share ideas, examples, lesson plans, photos with others here in Ngā Kiriahi, we might inspire someone else to trial a simple task in the classroom. The ideas don't have to be big - just enough to become part of our daily teaching, like changing a word in writing time from editing to debugging...we could have a wero a day?

                Hey, I totally agree. As a NE teacher, we are so focused on teaching our young people how to do the basics, yet we need to remember that CT and 3DO creates such a creative space for our students to be creative, and solve problems that will effect their lives so dramatically, in all areas of their lives. It is a game changer!!!! We do need to support each other in this new journey and share resources and ideas just as we expect our Akonga to do. Manaakitanga!!! The Exemplars are useful!!!!

                  Kia ora Sina. I agree it's great seeing the opportunities DT gives our kids to solve real world issues. 

                  With your concern about getting enough PD to lift your practice, have you had a look at the pīkau/toolkits now available through this website? There are pīkau aimed at each of the progress outcomes for computational thinking up to NCEA level and two pīkau targeted at designing and developing digital outcomes progress outcome 1 and more to come. Each pīkau takes about 45 mins-an hour to do. They all have concrete examples in them of what you can do with your class, often without requiring any special gadgets. I highly recommend having a look at them.

                    What excites me about DT is our kids being given the opportunity to be curious and have real life hands on learning to solve real issues concerning our own community.  

                    What concerns me..... not getting enough time and PD around DT properly to really lift my practice so that I can be the best teacher that I can be to implement it in my class.  If DT is really important there should be some form of equity on how DT is rolled out in our schools.  Give everyone a fair share of the cake....

                      What excites me: now that there is an emphasis of learning about computational thinking and how to design digital outcomes, there are so many possibilities for students to use the opportunities that teachers are going to be giving them to do great things now and in their future. It could be a real game-changer for so many students to shine in ways that were previously not possible.

                      What concerns me: too many teachers will not consider providing such opportunities as they don't feel they have the time, expertise or resources they think is needed or they don't believe it's important enough to include in their planning.
