Community pānui: Around the virtual watering hole March 2019

Kia ora, here's the latest summary of conversations happening across Ngā Kiriahi for the start of 2019. What kaupapa have you been engaging with? What new ideas have you gathered and/or trialed as a result of the pīkau (online courses) or ahikaroa (meet ups). What questions do you have? English Medium

What excites and concerns you about teaching Digital Technologies?
 Clive Francis reflects that students, learning about and creating with DT | HM could shine in ways that were was previously not possible, but worries that teachers may not have the time, expertise or resources to implement. What do you think?

What aspects of computational thinking do you recognise in what you are already teaching? Give one... Teachers are sharing just how much computational thinking already happens classrooms everyday. 

I was surprised, now that I understand what computational thinking is, how much I apply it in every day life and situations. It's about following logical problem solving routes to make solutions easier, like getting a class to the library, or sorting them into groups. Adam Alexander 

Years 1-6: Feel free to share your experiences of teaching DDDO - the good, bad or ugly. Gerard MacManus blows us away with some very useful and entertaining design options in response to real world contexts and issues. Tip: Look out for the rat trap still frame animation movie!

The Sorting Network Activity and Sorting Network: Viv Hall share some ideas when using the sorting network activity and and Tracy Henderson illustrates the concept that 'decomposition' happens in each rectangle demonstrating how computers can only compare one thing at a time, yet can be programmed to do some complex tasks. Have you used this activity yet? How did it go?

Virtual realityVR and AR: Is this something students can produce? Clive Francis adds another perspective to AR and VR, that we should consider providing students with the tools and skills needed to create (rather than just consume) AR/VR experiences and that the option available are not necessarily complicated or expensive. What do you think? Creating and/or consuming, where does this technology fit into learning?

Have you seen students engaging with some form of programming? Razmi Pal and Viv Hall share how their students are programming using Beebots and Scratch. Viv also shared an iPad related coding programme, Daisy the Dinosaur. How are your students programming, share your plugged or unplugged ideas here.

DDDO or CT: Members have been commenting on Jo Fothergill's observation about designing and developing digital outcomes with limited resources for younger students. Is this a reality in your school?

Enjoyed going through the Module and discussion. I have been doing STEAM projects with students and incorporated some of the electronic stuff. However, DDDO & PO became much clearer as I went through the videos & discussion. I like the idea of sharing resources. Thanks for sharing the websites and examples. Kamrul Jajil

Ethics and morality of AI
: Tony Caines asks, will we examine the ethic and morality of AI algorithms in policy as well as the functions? The debate about the effects of technology on humanity in a digital age is an important conversation to have. You thoughts?

Ways of learningAyngel Henry: I think I am a mixture of both ways of learning Maui & Mahuika I like to get a good insight of what it is asking of my students but also being playful, getting into the subject straight away.

pikau discussion: Kiran Swamy: I am a bit of both, I feel good if there is a structure for my students, but I also want my students to be creative and learn together.

Maui: Sandra Campbell: Impatience,  wanting to get on with it, then learn from my mistakes.

MahuikaHow I learn best: Tracey Burgess: I learn best when there is a purpose that I can see I will then implement. I enjoy the reading of new information but I retain it better when I can see an application I can then do with this information. I have read about many pedagogy but the ones I can apply in my current situation are the important ideas. 

Boots and all: Adam Alexander: Maui, definitely jumping in boots and all.

Learning: Ruth Holt: Like many here, bit of both and it also depends on the situation.

It depends: Katie McGrath: I think it depends on how comfortable I am with the learning. If it is something I have done before then I can be quite wizzy and quick. Otherwise I tend to observe for a while and then take my time with it.
